Olaudah soon left to live in England. In England he was finally paid for his services in the navy but Captain Pascal still refused to pay Equiano his share of the prize. Olaudah soon went back to sailing as a profession. He found it freeing and it was the most profitable profession he was qualified to do. Equiano soul searched and looked to many churches and religions to find his faith (BBC Documentary). It was during a trip to Spain that Equiano describes his conversion to Christianity where he says that he was "born again". In some versions this part of the narrative has been cut, but for Equiano this was the key moment of his life (Carey). He found his faith not in church but while on the sea in treacherous waters when he was thrown overboard. He assumed he was going to die and prayed that he could die at Jesus' feet, but he did not die and he considered it a sign from God. He believed that he was meant to save others and his people the Africans (BBC Documentary).
